The Shore Drive Blog : Who Reads the Newspaper Anymore?

Who Reads the Newspaper Anymore?

Regarding a recent blog about newspaper advertising, I am curious as to whether those under the age of thirty or so read their local paper.  I am 38 and I try to read the paper every day, and I specifically pay attention to Saturday's Real Estate Weekly.  I do look specifically at ads from other agents.  The newspaper ads still do a good job with name recognition, I believe.

You constantly hear of the companies that own newspapers whose profits are decreasing, even plunging on the print side.  They make up profits on their internet side.

My question is "do those under 30 read the paper?"

Hey Mark,

Well, I am not under 30 but my son is 21 and has been often my guide for what is happening with the new generation...he does not read the newspaper at all. He gets all his news online, is a big fan of the RSS feeds and told me recently that he isn't sure he has ever even opened a phone book.

Normally i would say that this may just be one opinion but when I was at his college one day I actually polled quite a few 20+ students and all said the same thing to me.

I think newspapers are going the way of the dinosaurs...:)

I am 44, and used to read the paper every day. For many reasons, I don't. Most buyers under 35 do not read it. the marketing angle form paper to web has shifted things dramatically in the last few years.

I wonder how many people over 40 read the paper.  Judging by the number sitting in the driveway in the evening.

HI Mark:)  I am sadly not under 30 anymore and almost your age in fact - I haven't read the paper except occasionally in years.  I think it really depends on what part of the country you are in, though.  There are still parts of the country where the internet is not so widely used  - at least from what I can see of some of my relatives! :)

Welcome to AR BTW - I look forward to reading more from you!

It's looking like my four year old son's future first job as a paperboy is not going to pan out.

You are really asking 2 questions - how many people "read" the paper and how many people "look at" the ads. Printed newspaper circulation (who really knows about readership?) is down is many markets.

Mark, I'm 34 and I still read the newspaper almost every day, but do get most of my news online.  I feel like I am a rarity among friends my age, very few, if any, who read the paper.  I read the real estate section, but honestly skip over most of the ads.  All my clients these days recognize that advertising in the newspaper is not the way to sell their home.

I agree Brian.  I think when I print a copy of a current listing from each of the sites I have it listed on, to show a seller on a listing appt. when they ask about internet marketing, that is appealing to them.   If you show old newspaper marketing from listings, they can't go and open up today's paper and see that ad unless you are running it everyday.

I read the paper everyday for years. now I read one once a month maybe? I spend way too much online and that really does not leave time to read a paper...

Good point Steve...and I would add further that those who are LOOKING at the ads are the very same people that bought an ad in the newspaper. Whenever I have done something different in any of the current newspaper ads we run it is always my fellow real estate associates from other agencies that notice it--not my family, friends or clients!

We have created our own monster and if we all begin to back out of newspaper print and go online we will not only save ourselves tons of $$ but we will finally reach our intended customers...online.

I'm too old for your survey! I'm 38 and read the paper almost everyday, usually just skim headlines, read the first and last paragraph of articles that catch my attention. I read the full article if I want to find out more. I know several people under the age of 30 who don't know what it's like to have ink from the paper on their hands.

I only run newspaper ads for Open Houses and then only if my target is age 45 and above.

They do not read the paper.  They have too many things that are available that give them immediate news notification.  I get the latest news on virtually anything on my phone instantly.  Why would I need to pick up a paper and read it.

The one exception is I live in a small town and there is a lot of special interest stuff in the local paper.  I do read that.

I don't read the papers.  The media is too biased and slanted for me.  I get my news online and do a lot of researching if a story strikes my fancy.

I am 53.  When I was 12 I delivered the paper and everyone subscribed to it.  Our town had two papers and many read both.  I still subscribe to the one remaining plus the Wall Street Journal.  I like to read it in the morning and evening.  My son, 25, and daughter, 22, do not read the paper unless I ask  them to read a specific article, and then they want me to read it to them!

I watched this morning as the TV newspeople held up front pages of various newspapers.  I will stick today's paper up in the attic for my kids to look at years from now. -Mark
